thought for today

The new testament reading today consists of the verses 'missed out' of Sundays lectionary reading about the sending out of 72 disciples. We are not sure what to make of these 'woes' to Chorazin and Bethsaida. Were they really that bad that they deserved such condemnation? This links with our modern angst about Joshua' conquest of the lands of Canaan. Were they really worse people than the people of Israel who displaced them? I think it is right to ask such questions, I am not sure about how we might answer them. What we can recognise and respond to is Joshua's plea to the people to be faithful, and Jesus call for us to continue that task.
