thought for today

What a curious reading from Zechariah. those who have warred against Jerusalem are to be punished, and then the survivors of those nations are to be compelled to come to Jerusalem to pay tribute. But this tribute is not a financial one to an earthly sovereign, it is a tribute of worship to God. Perhaps the hope is that what begins under compulsion will one day become voluntary. But whatever their nationality, and reason for being there, all who are in Jerusalem ought to be secure. Tomorrow's reading will go further and promise nourishment aswell as security.

Jesus sends the twelve out to the people of Galilee, with no earthly security. But under God's hand the handing over of God's kingdom mission from Jesus to his followers is underway, and we are invited to be part of its continuation today.
