Saturday 1 June
Approaching the ninth Sunday in ordinary time.
Where we are heading to (readings for Sunday Jun 2):
1 Kings 8:22-23, 41-43
Psalm 96:1-9
Galatians 1:1-12
Luke 7:1-10
Readings for today:
Psalm 96:1-9
1 Kings 8:31-40
Luke 4:31-37
Brief thoughts for today:
The passage from I Kings is the middle section of Solomon’s prayer of dedication for the new temple which we have been reading about this week. Some verses from the prayer may be read in your church tomorrow, but there would be no harm in reading the whole prayer today (22-53). I am not sure that all contemporary Christians would have exactly the same view of prayer as Solomon, but God surely knows our hearts just as well as he did the hearts of ancient Israel. The disturbed man may fear the presence of Jesus, but he recognises him as the Holy One of God who also knows hearts, and can change them.
