Reflecting on the tenth Sunday in ordinary time (part 2).

Where we have come from (readings for Sunday Jun 9):

1 Kings 17.17-24
Psalm 30
Galatians 1:11-24
Luke 7:11-17

Readings for today:

Psalm 68:1-10, 19-20
Judges 11.29-40
Galatians 2:11-14

Brief thoughts for today:

If the story of the binding of Isaac yesterday is hard to understand fully, then the story of Jepthah's
daughter is surely incomprehensible. It is one of Phylis Tribble's texts of terror - and I confess to not
knowing what to make of it.

The paragraph from Galatians about Peter at Antioch is crucial to our understanding of the rest of the
letter. No doubt Peter felt torn between various outcroppings of the emerging Christian community, and
also a residual loyalty to fellow Jews across the Roman Empire who were in a potentially vulnerable
situation. But Paul has no time for compromise on two things that he regards as absolutely essential:
that Gentile Christians do not need to become Jews - and that the whole Christian community should
be able to sit down to eat together.
